Successful ECMO Transfer Across Continents: A Journey of Hope and Expertise

In the world of critical care medicine, timely intervention and advanced technology can make a world of difference. Recently, we witnessed an inspiring case that highlights the importance of a well-coordinated medical response and the effectiveness of Eurosets cutting-edge ECMOLife technology.

Patient Profile

The patient involved in this remarkable story was a 58-year-old male. Unfortunately, while traveling in Athens, Greece, he experienced an acute myocardial infarction, which led to cardiac failure. Faced with not-effective medical and interventional treatment options, the clinicians decided to initiate ECMO as a life-saving measure.

Reasons for transfer

Upon stabilization, the patient’s family urged for his transfer back to Korea. The plan was put in place to transport him using the newly developed ECMOLife technology.

The transfer process

The transfer was a complex operation that took 18 hours in total, demonstrating resilience and coordination among medical professionals. The journey comprised four hours in a ground ambulance and 14 hours in a two-leg air ambulance, including a one-hour fuel stop. The dedicated team from Turkey played a crucial role in ensuring that the transition and transport was smooth and effective.
A team from Turkey used the ECMOLife, which was transported from Turkey and carefully primed in Athens for the patient’s needs, during the transfer. This showcase of advanced ECMO technology proved invaluable, allowing the patient to be stabilized throughout the journey.

Success and outcomes

Upon arrival at the destination hospital in Korea, after a total ECMO duration of approximately 10 days, he was weaned off ECMO around four days after his arrival, marking a profound success story in critical care.
The journey was not without its challenges; during the transfer, the patient experienced a brief episode of hypotension lasting about 30 minutes. However, due to the expertise of the team and the reliability of the ECMO technology, the patient was continuously monitored and cared for without any further complications.

A legacy of excellence

This successful transfer not only emphasizes the extraordinary capabilities of medical devices like ECMOLife but also underscores the dedication of the team involved. The team was led by Dr. Kadir Doğruer, senior anesthesiologist and resuscitation specialist, and also very experienced in patient transfer and Tarık Demir, an adult and pediatric perfusionist with extensive ECMO experience.

As we celebrate the successful transfer of this patient, we are reminded of the endless possibilities in modern medicine and the importance of teamwork in delivering exceptional patient care. This testament to human resilience and medical innovation certainly serves as an inspiration for future endeavors in critical care and patient transport.
