Eurosets presents Colibri, the lightest and most compact extracorporeal life support device that can be carried inside a backpack
New frontiers in the field of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of cardiac arrest. The Medolla-based biomedical company announced the market introduction at EACTS 2022. Thanks to its minimal dimensions and optimal ergonomics, Colibri can be used during extreme rescue operations. The use of a special backpack equipped with a barycentric hook also allows it to be transported by air, such as by drone and helicopter. The new magnetic levitation pump allows use on both adult and paediatric and neonatal patients.
Medolla (MO), 6 October 2022 – Eurosets, a company based in Medolla (MO) and a leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of advanced medical devices, announced the commercial launch of Colibrì, the lightest life-saving device capable of temporarily replacing cardiac and pulmonary function in adult, paediatric and neonatal patients, at the 36th European EACTS (European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) congress, which this year will be held in Milan from 5-8 October.
Less than two years after the market launch of ECMOlife, Colibri complements and expands Eurosets’ product portfolio by introducing an innovative technology suitable for use in a variety of therapeutic applications, including extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (E-CPR) in cardiac arrest, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS).
There are about 400,000 cases of cardiac arrest in Europe each year with survival rates of 5%-10%. ECMO devices such as Colibri will increasingly be used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures within the ‘chain of survival’, creating a true life-saving pathway for cardiac arrest. It is assumed that with the use of these devices, the survival rate could be as high as 60 per cent.
Equipped with a centrifugal pump with magnetic levitation and a device capable of artificially oxygenating the blood, Colibrì is the lightest and most compact cardio-respiratory support device on the market, ideal in all scenarios in which intra- and extra-hospital transportability are crucial, including the most extreme rescue operations. Its minimal dimensions, optimal ergonomics and the possibility of being placed inside a special wearable backpack, also equipped with a winch hook, make it extremely easy to transport wherever the patient is, making Colibrì the most versatile system in its field of application.
In addition to adult patients, the device, thanks to a dedicated centrifugal pump, can be used on paediatric or even neonatal patients. In these cases, it is used for problems related to severe congenital diseases of the cardiovascular or cardiorespiratory system.
In addition to its extreme transportability and its ability to temporarily replace the functions of the heart and lung, Colibrì allows advanced monitoring of the procedure in progress, and is equipped with a Wi-Fi connection that enables its vital parameters to be observed remotely, thus guaranteeing greater safety and reliability for healthcare workers.
“Two years after the successful launch of ECMOLife, which has supported over 3,000 critically ill patients in more than 40 countries around the world, Eurosets’ portfolio is expanded with the launch of Colibrì, an innovative system whose potential can revolutionise cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures and make an important contribution in terms of increased survival rates. – says Antonio Petralia , CEO, Executive Vice President and Technical and Scientific Director of Eurosets – There is one imperative that Eurosets cannot escape: to continue to innovate and invest in research and development to improve the product portfolio and Colibrì is fully in line with this vision. In addition, we want to continue to pursue our mission, which is fully represented by our claim ‘Every life matters’, by responding with innovative solutions to different care needs’.
